Seeking the right proportions for cabriole legs

From Jim Brown, Reno, NV:

Every time I see a Shopsmith demonstration, I get inspired to make cabriole legs. They always make it look so simple. What I need are some practical dimensions for the legs. I never seem to get the right proportions.

There really is no simple answer to this question. Proportion, style and grace, like hair-dos, food and cars are very subjective. My best suggestion is for you to look for plans and patterns that you like in woodworking books.

A few years back, Woodsmith Magazine had an issue that discussed the making of cabriole legs. You can order a back-issue copy by going to their website (www.backissuesstore.com/nsearch.html).

Fine Woodworking Magazine (Taunton Press) also offers a book entitled Queen Anne Furniture. You can order a copy from Fine Woodworking's website (www.taunton.com/fw). It's listed under Woodworking Books / Historic Styles.

Another GREAT book is by Israel Sack, entitled (I believe) Eighteenth Century Furniture. This is the real authority on classic designs. I've been unable to find it on the web. Check with your local bookseller.

American Country Furniture by David T. Smith is another very popular choice, although I don't really care for the “Country Look”.

The best answer is the answer that's best for YOU.
