California man recounts “Christmas Surprise” of 1954

Dick Phillips of San Mateo, CA writes...
“It was the Fall of 1954 when I stood in awe as I marveled over what appeared to be the most beautiful machine I had ever seen. It was just what I needed (and wanted). I had gotten out of the military service; we had just used all of our savings for a down-payment on a new home and a third of my income was going toward mortgage payments. On top of that, we had a small daughter and another on the way.

I wanted that Shopsmith MARK V to build the many small things a new home needs. On our once a week 5-mile trip to the grocery store, I would go across the street to Wisnom's Hardware to drool over their demonstration model MARK V. But how to afford it?

Unknown to me, my wife Barbara had been saving a little cash each week from the grocery money until as Christmas approached, she had enough for a down-payment. I was never more surprised when on Christmas morning, my wife led me across the street to our neighbor's home to present me with my new Shopsmith MARK V. I've lost count of the many things I have made for home, church and museum where I volunteer. My Shopsmith MARK V is still in great shape and runs as well as the day I got it. Oh! I have added some accessories since then. It's still my favorite tool and I use it frequently. Well...gotta go and make a frame for a painting of our mountain cabin!

California handyman realizes dream of MARK V ownership

Raymond Uri of El Monte, CA writes...
“In the Spring of 1977, I was living in Northern California and had just finished fixing-up a small building for use as a woodworking shop. At the time, I was a handyman, doing odd jobs...and having a woodworking shop was “my dream”.

One day, my neighbor Jim called me to say that he needed a ride to visit a friend. I had the time so I said yes. It was while I was standing outside at his friend's house that I noticed something in the corner of the garage. Excitedly, the words came to me: 'A Shopsmith !' My cabinet-making friend has one that he uses all the time and I was convinced that a Shopsmith MARK V was the right tool for my shop, too.

Now, before my eyes, was the tool that I wanted. I could tell that it hadn't been used for a while and thought that maybe he'd want to sell it. I didn't hesitate to ask. His answer was no...but he also said that if he changed his mind, he'd let Jim know. I was disappointed but hoped that maybe someday, he'd change his mind.

Well...many months later, he did change his mind. When I received the call from Jim and he told me, I was very excited. Everything was right...including the price. That same day, Jim and I went to pick up my new Shopsmith MARK V. On that very day, I cut my first piece of wood in my woodworking shop and my dream was realized!

That's my story. I've moved four times since then and with each move, my Shopsmith MARK V has moved with me. I have built many woodworking projects and just finished several oak display cabinets last month. Some day, when I get older, I'll pass on my Shopsmith MARK V, but right now, I wouldn't give it up for anything!

North Dakota woodworker says he'll NEVER part with his MARK V!

Armin Heidt of Wing, ND. writes...
“I was in a mall in Bismarck and Shopsmith was demonstrating their MARK V. The more I watched the demonstrator, the more interested I became. Pretty soon, my wife came walking up to where I was and watched me for a while. Then she said...'You'd sure like to have a saw like that, wouldn't you?' I told her that I sure would, so we bought the MARK V and I've never enjoyed anything more in my life. I've had my MARK V for over 20 years, now with very little trouble. I wouldn't give it up for anything!
