Troubleshooting Table
MARK V Wedge Locks & Way Tubes

Printer friendly PDF copy of article

The MARK V Wedge Locks are used to secure the Headstock and Table Carriage in any preferred position along the length of the Tubular Ways. To tighten these Locks, spin them closed, then tighten one-quarter turn - NO MORE! Over-tightening the Locks will permanently damage the Way Tubes, preventing the Headstock and Table Carriage from moving freely when the Locks are released.

Free movement is also dependent upon keeping the Way Tubes properly cleaned and waxed at all times. For this, you can use ordinary furniture paste wax or a special sealant such as Top Cote® to protect the Tubes from rust and corrosion.

However, don't just wax these items - buff them, too! Failure to rub off any excess paste wax will cause sawdust to accumulate on the Tubes around the base of the Table Carriage and Headstock, causing these assemblies to stick instead of sliding freely.

Problem

Possible Cause(s)

Remedy

Headstock hard to move

Way Tubes not properly waxed

Tubes waxed too much - wax not properly rubbed out

Clean Tubes with paint thinner, mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. Apply paste wax or Top Cote and buff to a polish.

Buff wax out thoroughly.

"Popping" sound when Wedge Locks are loosened; Headstock is difficult to slide

Wedge Locks have been tightened too tightly

Loosen Locks and check Way Tubes for dents. If dents are found, see last remedy, below. If no dents are found, tighten the Lock, spin back with one finger until Lock stiffens - then turn an additional one-quarter turn to hold the Headstock securely in place.

Can't move Headstock and Table Carriage apart

Wedge Locks too tight: Way Tubes are in a "bind".

Loosen both Locks. Check Way Tubes for dents. If dents are found, see below. If dents are not found, follow steps outlined above for tightening Locks.

Way Tubes are dented

Wedge Locks have been over-tightened.

No cure, although turning the Wedge Locks one-quarter turn may help. To do so, loosen both screws under the Power Mounts. If dents are bad enough, replace Way Tubes.
