Bandsaw tension adjustments

From Scott Hendrix, via e-mail, Southern New Jersey:

I have a Shopsmith MARK V with Bandsaw. I purchased it used and have no manuals. While working on a project with the Bandsaw, I made a turn with the blade and it broke. I'm now putting a new one on and need to know how to tell when I have enough tension on the blade and when the tracking is set properly.

Remove the side cover. On the left side, you'll see a scale graduated in fractions of an inch with a red indicator bar showing behind the scale. Install your new blade and turn the adjustment screw that's accessible from the rear of the machine case. Adjust the screw until this red indicator bar disappears behind the appropriate mark. For example, if you're using a 1/4" wide blade, turn the screw until the bar disappears behind the 1/4" graduation.

If your saw was tracking properly when you were using it (prior to the blade breaking), there is probably no need to make any tracking adjustments once the blade has been changed. Tracking adjustments (when necessary) are made by adjusting the blade back-up rollers. Manuals are available for all Shopsmith Tools. Just call 1-800-543-7586 TOLL-FREE to order copies.

Needs parts for Shopsmith 10-ER

From Ernie Kuhn, via e-mail:

I recently bought an older Shopsmith, alleged by the seller to be “about 20 years old”. After two friends helped me lug it home (it weighs a TON) and I did a little research, I found that my model 10-E was a lot closer to 50+ years old! It still runs but a few pieces are missing. The label claims it was manufactured by Magna in San Francisco. Are any parts available?

Your machine was made for just a few years from 1947 to 1952. I'm afraid that we (Shopsmith) have no repair parts for these machines. However, if you need an exploded view of the machine identifying the various parts, we can provide that. Just call TOLL-FREE, 1-800-762-7555 and make your request. If you need parts, your best option is to contact Battels Hardware in Whittier, California.
