Ripping
a 45 degree bevel on a wide panel
From
Rob Alleman, Irvine, CA:
I have a late 50's model MARK V and I'm having trouble figuring out
how to put a 45 degree bevel on some panels. Two of the panels are 28"
x 18" and two others are 42" x 18". I need to bevel the 18" sides of these.
How would you tackle this if you didn't have the upgrades of the newer
models?
Start by moving everything (table carriage & headstock) to the far right
(tailstock end of the machine) and locking them tightly into position.
Tilt your table to 45 degrees and lock the tilting mechanism down tightly.
Clamp a straight, wooden guide strip (or piece of aluminum or steel angle
iron) across the underside of your workpiece. I'd make this strip 3 to
4 feet long, so it protrudes well beyond each end of your workpiece by
a foot or so. Hold your workpiece firmly down against the surface of your
saw table as you let your guide strip ride against the edge of your saw
table, to control your cut.
