ASK SMITTY!
Here are the questions . . . and SMITTY’S answers for this issue!

Compound frame rabbets

From James Jones of New York, NY

I made a compound mitered picture frame that rises 60-degrees from the working plane. What setting should I use on the table saw to make the rabbets for the glass in the back?

The formula for the rabbet angle on a compound mitered picture frame: Subtract the working angle from 90-degrees. In this case, you simply subtract from 60-degrees  from 90-degrees to arrive at a table angle of 30-degrees . Use your dado package to make the cut as shown here in Figure 3.

Non-toxic finish

From Glen Gaither of Talladega, AL

What would be a suitable finish for a wood cutting board, bowl, etc,  designed to be used in food preparation?

We recommend using a non-toxic Salad Bowl Finish, such as the one from General Finishes, offered in the Shopsmith On-Line Catalog. If you have another finish that you’d like to use but aren’t certain of its toxicity, we advise you to contact the manufacturer’s consumer information department prior to use.
