“Chatterbox” Shaper Cutters? From Jim Jones of Rochester, NY: I have a model 500 Shopsmith MARK V. I purchased the Shaper Package and an assortment of cutters this past winter. The rail, stile and cove cutters work fine with soft woods. However, I’ve experienced constant “chatter” when working with red oak (I work with red oak 95% of the time).
I’ve checked and re-checked the speed setting -- adjusted my feed rates -- and always use featherboards for consistent pressure. Any suggestions? There are three possible answers to your problem:
First . . .you may be trying to take too big of a “bite” with your cutter in order to make your cut in a single pass. Depending on the profile you’re cutting -- and how much of your edge is to be removed -- I would suggest that you try making your cut in two or even three passes instead of one.
If this doesn’t solve your problem (and your cutters are properly honed), your MARK V’s quill bearings may be badly worn. If your MARK V was manufactured before 11/01/84 (serial #’s 189999 and earlier), your machine has a one-bearing quill. In this case, heavy side-thrust operations such as routing or shaping can wear this bearing out sooner than those on the later (and current) dual bearing quill models.
Shopsmith offers a two-bearing-quill retrofit kit that should solve your problem. Just order part # 555088. In any event, if you suspect that your quill is the problem, I suggest that you call the Shopsmith Technical Services Hotline TOLL-FREE at 1-800-762-7555 to discuss it with one of our Technicians. There are some important considerations you should know about before replacing the quill bearings on certain earlier MARK V models. Continue . . . |
