Man highly recommends Shopsmith’s Traveling Woodworking Academies Bill Lucy, via e-mail . . . “Attended this training (Shopsmith’s Traveling Woodworking Academy) last week in Huntington Beach, CA. It was my second and I learned so much. Doug Reid is a great instructor and always brings a fresh approach. It was the fourth of these academies for one of the attendees. He said that no matter how many he attends, he still learns something new each time. So, if you have never been (to one of these academies) or haven’t been to one in awhile, it might be worth going to the next one in your area.”
Son and son-in-law renovate rusty MARK V for retiree Art Wissing of Louisville, KY writes . . . “(In 1978) . . . my son and son-in-law came upon an old, rusted Shopsmith that had been purchased by a neighbor in 1955. When the neighbor passed away, his spouse stored the Shopsmith in their garage, where it was neglected for years. I have been doing carpentry nearly all my life. My son and I had gone to several Shopsmith seminars here in the Louisville area. I knew how nice they were.
Unknown to me, my son had a friend at Shopsmith, who said they could recondition the headstock of the old Shopsmith, so it was sent in for restoration. In the meantime, my son and son-in-law renovated the carriage. They spent hours removing the rust on the base and repainting it. They then purchased the needed items for the headstock and related components, got the headstock back and re-assembled the machine.
The two, knowing how much I had talked of Shopsmith presented the machine to me under spotlight. My son recalls how ecstatic I was when I caught sight of it. What a delight! I have since treasured my Shopsmith. At 75, I’m still an avid carpenter and use my “rescued” Shopsmith for everything.” Ohioan still owns MARK V he purchased in 1954! Raymond Broughton of Clinton, OH writes . . . “My first Shopsmith was a Model 10-ER that I purchased from my hardware employer. I was one of the (company’s) tool salesmen when we were invited to the unveiling of the new model in Cleveland. When I first saw the MARK V, I turned green (with envy). I thought I could never sell my 10-ER once such a great machine hit the market. But, I went home and sold it quickly and deposited the money with my employer to buy the first (MARK V) in the store.
We had built a display area around the Shopsmith (in the store), including a clock showing the one-minute change-over using all of the accessories. It was the best in the country. When The Saturday Evening Post printed an article on Dr. Goldschmidt (Shopsmith’s inventor and founder), they took a picture of me and our display.
My MARK V (serial no. 273718) was purchased in 1954 and I still use it constantly. I owned a business for 32 years and bought two more (MARK V’s) to use for building and maintenance. It’s a wonderful machine. Every household should have one. I sure can’t live without mine ! More Mail from our Owner’s . . . |
