Man still owns MARK
V he won in slogan contest nearly 40 years ago!
Marion Bockbrader
of North Baltimore, OH writes . . .
“I got my Shopsmith
MARK V in 1962 in a rather unusual way. I was a part-time sales representative
for the Cargill Seed Corn Company and they had a slogan contest for their
employees. First prize was $1,000 cash...and the second prize was a Shopsmith
MARK V. At that time, I had no interest in woodworking...but the $1,000
cash prize was appealing to me, so I entered two slogans, one that my
wife dreamed up and one of my own creation.
As you have probably guessed, we were the second prize winner of the Shopsmith,
but were never told which slogan was the winner...so you know who’s taking
the credit !
At the time, I was disappointed that I didn’t win the $1,000 cash prize.
But I know the money would have been spent with nothing to show for it...while
now, I have had the MARK V for 37 years and am using it more every year.
I’m 77 years old now, semi-retired and doing woodworking as a hobby, thanks
to my Shopsmith. About three years ago, I bought a reconditioned Scroll
Saw for my MARK V which is now my pride and joy. Although I now have many
of the attachments available and still use them, right now, the Scroll
Saw is my favorite.”
Missouri do-it-yourselfer
does it all -- first with 10-E, then with MARK V!
Robert Myer
of Kimberling City, M writes . . .
“My MARK V story
begins with my original purchase of an early 10-E model after being discharged
from the service. I put this unit on a cement slab and foundation and
extended the kitchen of our new home, then built a large garage and workshop
around it. I gave the 10-E to my son after buying a MARK V and it’s still
going strong with no problems.
I’d been looking for a MARK V for a long time...then one day, I saw an
ad for one in the local newspaper for a price that fit our budget. It
had been used by a builder who treated it quite roughly...but it still
ran OK. A great accessory that came with it was the Bandsaw. I really
enjoy it.
I’ve used (the MARK V) to build many projects, including cabinet work
for a fee. It has served me very well with only one minor speed changer
part and belt replacement. Incidentally, after finding the Shopsmith website,
I was able to contact your parts department and the service was great!
Not only was the parts employee knowledgeable, but she got (the parts)
right out to me...so I had very little down-time.
Needless to say, I’m sold on the Shopsmith company and products. The MARK
V is the center of all my woodworking activities.”
