Re-sizing
Door Holes For Locksets If, on the other hand, there's a bigger difference in size, I'd fill the existing hole with a wooden plug that you've cut out using a bandsaw, scroll saw, saber saw or coping saw. Glue it into position and allow it to dry overnight. It doesn't have to fit perfectly...just well enough to serve as a new, solid center for drilling the new hole, using the proper sized hole saw. As a third option, you could take a small piece of scrap stock, about 3/4" thick. Drill a 1" hole in its approximate center. Glue a short piece of 1" diameter dowel into the hole, leaving no more than 1-1/2" protruding out from the hole. Allow it to dry overnight. Then, drill a pilot hole in the center of this dowel (for the pilot drill bit on your hole saw. Position this scrap piece across the back side of your existing lock hole with the dowel protruding into its center....and the pilot hole in your dowel centered in your existing lock hole. Using two wood screws, attach the scrap stock to the back side of your door. Now, center your hole saw in the pilot hole and use it as your center to drill out the larger sized hole. When you've finished, remove your scrap stock, fill the screw holes with wood putty and insert your lockset. |
