Tire-Throwing Bandsaw

From Bob Fuggiti, Chicago, IL:

I recently purchased a used Shopsmith Bandsaw and power it with my MARK V. The problem is...the blade forces the rubber tire off the front of the drive wheel. I've set the tension to tighten it, but then the blade starts to slip off the back of the idler wheel. Can you figure out what's going wrong?

A couple of things could be causing your problem.

First of all, your tire has obviously come unglued...so, no matter what any other problems may be, you'll have to order a new tire and the adhesive to hold it in position. Order part # 555644 (Bandsaw Tire/Adhesive Kit). It comes with a new tire, adhesive and instructions for installation.

Now, we need to talk about the potential cause of this. More often than not, this problem is created when you drop the Bandsaw into position on the MARK V and slide the Headstock down to connect with the Coupler. If you BANG the Bandsaw into the coupler fairly hard, you can bend or loosen the bearing retainer clip (Item 31, part # 502726 on your exploded view)...or just loosen the bolt holding it. If it's loose, tighten it. If it's bent, replace it. It's less than $2. You should check this clip first...and tighten or replace it if necessary.

If you've done this and find no problem here, I suggest that you call Shopsmith's TOLL-FREE Technical Services Hotline at 800-762-7555 and they'll help you identify the problem.
