Friend leaves MARK
V to his buddy!
Russell Dennig
of Fresno, CA writes…
“My Shopsmith
MARK V is a machine I admired each time I saw it in my friend’s shop in
Chico, CA. In 1992, my friend passed away at the age of 92 and I
was notified by his wife that all or any portion of his extensive shop
equipment was left to me if I wanted it. He was still doing woodworking
up to his last illness.
I made two trips
to Chico to pick up the MARK V, a (self-contained) Shopsmith Planer, a
Shopsmith Belt Sander (now self-contained), many Shopsmith attachments
and a host of other hand and small machine tools.
Sometimes, I
feel like my friend is looking over my shoulder to see if I’m doing justice
to his tools. I am . . . and think my friend would appreciate my endeavors.”
Father passes MARK
V (and memories of many projects) on to son
John Beck
III, San Jose, CA writes…
“My father bought
his MARK V shortly after I was born (April, 1956)…to help him add a new
master bedroom to our home. I guess I took up too much space!
He also used it to open up the front bedroom so that it became an extension
of the kitchen into an eating area.
I remember he
would pull out the Shopsmith from the garage and use it for all sorts
of projects. One was the “camp kitchen”…a box we used when we went
camping which was a portable kitchen that we could put out on the picnic
table at the campsite. The other was the deck and drawer system
we put inside our 1966 VW van.
When I got my
own house, I noticed that Did didn’t use it much anymore, so I let him
know that when he was ready to let it go, I wanted it. So, Christmas
about two years ago, he asked me to come and get it.
I’ve since cleaned
it up, taken a class on how to use it, bought some new accessories and
completed a couple of projects. I love working with it and can’t
wait to do even more with it.”
Mother’s legacy lives on through man’s Shopsmith MARK V
John Hurt
of McEwen, TN writes…
“I’m the middle
child of 11 children. When my mother passed away, a small legacy was left
to each of us. When I received this money I thought: ‘The Shopsmith MARK
V is something I can buy and remember my parents when I use it, and also
receive a lot of enjoyment from it.’
In 1982, the
year of the World’s Fair in Knoxville, I saw the MARK V being demonstrated
at the Fair and the many ways it could be used. I placed my order. It
was my lucky day when it was delivered to my home and it has far surpassed
my expectations.
I’ve made tables,
stools, benches, desks, lamps, candlesticks, rolling pins, bookcases,
boxes, wooden bowls and many other things. Thanks for making a quality
product. I’ve recommended it to several of my friends . . . and am looking
forward to many more years of pleasure using my Shopsmith MARK V.”
